Black Hills Audubon Society

Education
Nominations now closed for the Dave McNett Environmental Educator of the Year Award

Black Hills Audubon restarted it's Education Committee in 2008, with Debbie Nickerson as the Chair.  The result has been several wildly popular birding classes taught by knowledgeable instructors.  Each class has filled up quickly with waiting lists.

All upcoming classes will be listed here as soon as they have been scheduled.

Local Birding Classes:

Beginning Birding Class starts Oct. 11th:
 Mondays, in class, 6:30 - 8:30 pm, October 11th, 18th, 25th, Nov. 1st ;
Sundays, field trips: Oct. 31st and Nov. 7th

Beat the rush! Now is the time to register for our fall Beginning Birding class taught by Matt Pike. Matt has been birding since childhood and brings his passion and knowledge to the classroom as well as into the field.

The class will be held on four consecutive Monday evenings starting on October 11th, from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. There will be two field trips on Sundays following the 3rd and 4th class.
(
The specific location in downtown Olympia will be given to folks when they register.

We will use Burt Guttman's book, Finding Your Wings. A Workbook for Beginning Bird Watchers as a course companion and registrants are encouraged to purchase and begin reviewing the book prior to class. (More details upon registration.)

Cost for members of BHAS is $25, plus purchase of the book (which is approximately $15).
Cost for non-BHAS-members is $30, plus purchase of the book.

Every one of our Birding classes filled to waiting-list status last
year.
We invite you to sign up now, or direct any questions, to Shelley Horn (shelleysmail@directv.net) or Debra Nickerson (Debranick@gmail.com) of our Education Committee.

Audubon Adventures

A curriculum supplement developed by the National Audubon Society for use in grades 4, 5, and 6.

Audubon Adventures is a curriculum supplement developed by the National Audubon Society for use in grades 4, 5, and 6. The lessons and hands-on activities develop in children an understanding of birds, wildlife, and their habitats, and expose learners to new ideas and perspectives that stimulate thinking and encourage skills development in multiple disciplines. What is included in the Audubon Adventures materials?

  • Audubon Adventures: five separate editions of a newspaper, written for students, about birds, wildlife, and habitats (enough copies for 32 students).

  • Audubon's Animal Adventures: a video specially edited for classroom use.

  • Audubon Adventures Teacher's Resource Manual: other classroom support materials.

If you would like to sponsor a classroom, please send a check for $35 made out to the Black Hills Audubon Society, PO Box 2524, Olympia, WA 98507. Put "Audubon Adventures" in the "for" space. BHAS has already received several applications for subscriptions, and would like to fund as many as possible. If you are a teacher and would like a free subscription for your classroom, please send us your name, school name and address, telephone number, e-mail if available, grade level and number of students. BHAS will pay for subscriptions on a first come, first served basis, subject to availability of funds. For more information, see
